The past and 2nd chances

Recently, working with my eldest son, I find myself
telling my side of past events. Not defending, but
a, (as I remember) version of what occurred.
Of course, what I remember is not a candy coated
version. I remember being a frightened 18 yr old kid.
Trying to raise a small 15 mo old boy and the legal stuff
that ensued at that time. I often wonder how different
our lives might have been, had we grown up together.
Would the separation anxiety be gone that I felt.
Would the new found friendship be something erased
by a teen years rebellion. And the difficult separation of going to college,
or in this case going to war, although I did see him off to Bagdad.
It is what it is 2 grown men trying to assemble some kind of relationship,
each of us not wanting to  re injure the other with mistakes of the past.
Thank God for 2nd chances. And for not letting my son die in Bagdad.
I appreciate the second chance.

Twenty five years gone

Twenty five years gone, around the corner,
It was still there, same place, same tattered stool.
The ROCKOLA, George Jones,
Willy and Waylon and the boys.

Yellow permanently nicotine stained mirror hung,
reflecting the now much older man.
The old nag back shelf still bearing,
the weight of the top shelf liquor.

Twenty five years gone, Duct tape held booth
and the table notched with true loves, names.
Where I met so many, kissed and danced.
For a chance to feel her tender breast.

Do you remember the place that stole the hours,
Pool table, drinks urine stained restroom floor?
The bull from the elder gents, that some how
made perfect sense to my youthful ear.

Twenty five years gone, the bartenders last call,
"You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here".
Clinging to eachother to keep from falling down,
The stumble home, a few hrs 'til the light of sunrise.

The place is still there, the process the same.
A comfortable feeling, a killing of time.
Stories of yesterdays glory,
Twenty five years gone. ......

Night sailing discovery

From my log book7/7 to 7/8 07 Traverse City Bay to Beaver Ilse.
Aboard a Gib Sea 37'. Distance 65 miles.
Journey time 10 hrs. approx.
4 man rotation, (2 hr, Helm, Watch, Stand by) night sail.
( 1 Seasick caused a 3hr helm  3hr watch for 2 of us.)
My turn 2100hrs. to 2400hrs. Helm, 2400 to 0300 Watch.
0300 to St James harbor, on stand by.
North star at 1130 thru left spreader.
No moonlight, black as can be.
Compass heading 185*
No GPS. on this boat.
Seas 4-6 ft some rain, NW wind gusts 17-20 knts.
changing to WSW reduced to 10-15 knts.
Head sail reefed 75%
Engine running rpm 2400.
Speed 7.5 knts.
Crossing Shipping lanes on my Navigation class 104-105,
it was then in the middle of Lake Michigan that I realized,
that I was a mere speck on this planet. I was no longer so important,
and I knew it. The vastness needs explored, and I was hooked even more on sailing.
I know, way to go Magellen! The epiphany, the inner peace, truly changed me.
Early morning light brought in to view St. James Harbor, 530 hrs.
I have since sailed to Beaver Isle, with the Shelly and the girls along.
My first charter, I just wanted to see if I could do it alone, this time from Charlevoix.
A 27 mi. trip took 4.5 hrs under sail the whole way, in day light.
Rough sea 4-6 ft. with a beam reach wind 17 knts.
But when you have to do this at night, not knowing, only a compass and a star,
That's when you learn what adventure is. That's a self worth discovering.
That's really living!

Wisdom

Never make it as a wise man,
Couldn't cut it as a poor man stealing
Tired of living like a blind man,
I'm sick of sight without a sense of feeling.
              (Nickleback)

Does your wisdom come from your parents?
Does it arrive after years of trial and error?
Do the millions of bits of pics in your brain
create a sum total of wisdom?
Are you said to be thick because you do not exercise
them, or you lack the ability to retain them?
Perhaps, just maybe, you numb to the
bombardment of the news repeating itself.
I do not boast wisdom it seem counter intuitive.
The sum total can be discibed in 4 rules for life.
1:  Show up
2:  Pay attention
3:  Don't lie
4:  Don't get too attached to the results
One of my favorite mentors lent this to me.
Thanks Steve.
I'm sure we can make a long list of wise sayings.
But for rules I like to start with the 4 then add
appropriate measures as the situation deems.
Chime in anybody, where does wisdom come from?

The Kings Coin

The coin from the King led me here,
Twisted arm and hungers need.

Please dear, if you could, draw near,
A piece of your bread, drink of your mead.

I travel to seek work, a new land,
not beg from hand, nor your keep.

I am a proud Lad, a Rover from the North
My tam and kilt, that's where I sleep.

Might I stay under your quilt tonight?,
I could tend your cattle or sheep.

Please stay for my man's dead an gone,
He went to earn coin and landed in a heap.

Would your virtue allow such a thing,
Me next to you, whilst you sleep?

Warmth is all any woman desires,
not just fire, nor a kettles' tea to steep.

It is all I may need to keep me here,
For the coin and it's price is much too steep

Tis the Kings coin brought you here,
It is you I found, It is you I'll keep.

Apocalypto

The conversation led to this 'End Times'
My immediate thought reverted to my early Christian
teaching. The thought that Faith, Believing, and Truth, was
POSITIVE and worries fears and doubts were NEGITIVE.

So many are trying to depict  that the end is what "WE"
will find left, and how we will exist. Should we not be called up?
Are you being called up??? Disappearing tomorrow?

So do you believe positive or negative?
I beleive that you create your own reality.

Their are days that I believe the next breath, the next thing that I might do
may profoundly effect the curve of the Earth. Is this too much????

Stop !!!!! Just for today Do not.. not even for a moment think as a species
we will perish. WE will not inflict harm, Break away from the thought that I
must hoard or deny others from what I might have. For if I do, Then I might surely give in
to the Adversary of this world.  Crazy ? Does your believing affect the world?
The day will come when I will work 1 day for a handful of wheat. May it never occur!
If it does may it feed a thousand fold. Stop negitivity!!!!!!

We do create our own reality. believe positive, encourage others too.
Live today, Live simply, So others might live too.

There's this place

The photo at the top of my blog could be some where in the Carribean.
Or the coast somewhere......but if you find yourself in northern Michigan,
Travel north to the Sleeping Bear Dunes, Sand piled hundreds of feet high on
the west bank of Lake Michigan. There is a dune climb, not for the out of
shape or faint of heart. Then wind your way north along M-109 to Glen Haven,
Take in the sites of this, period in history, town and museum.
Continue North out of town on M-22 past Glen Arbor a mile or 2.
Keep a close watch out for Pyramid Point Trail. Climb a 2.7 mi
trail thru the trees, up, up until you break the top of the tree line.
The veiw is the Manitou Islands, And it is 500 ft.straight down to the water.
I discribe arriving there as breath taking.........There's this place...

Broiler Chicks AKA The Raptors

The notification to order your Broiler Chicks came
a couple of days ago. I usually raise 25 to 50 each yr.
to fill the freezer. I usually sell a few too.
Last year the price was $7.00 ea. $7.50 cut up.
Most came to 4.5 lbs ea. and took 9 weeks to get
that big. We call them the Raptors because of the ravenous
way they eat. Don't get knocked down in the chicken
house around these birds!
The pic is when they first arrive home.
Hard to believe they 're ready to eat in just 2 months.

Going Down

Running with the weight of gold I heard it said
Is just as hard with the weight of lead.  (Grateful Dead)

You are a steward of all you may own, the car, the house.
The dog, the cat, your ten gallon hat.
Recent Quake/ Tsunami posed the question.
What if tomorrow it was gone?
Would it be free and liberating, after the initial shock.
Our would you be hopelessly lost with out all your "stuff".
A man I know is struggling to hold on to all his possesions right now,
Because of the economy, because of the path he chose.
He appears happy but what a weight he must hold.
It is a wait and see if it will bring him down.
I often wonder if possesions really sate a person.
Or is it the next distraction waiting to go down.....

Sailing

I was bitten by the sailing bug 7yrs ago.
Not just a little daysailer boat, but I wanted
the ability to sail the ocean.
After some online research I found the nearest
ASA approved School was in Traverse City Mich.
The classes were on 30-39 ft yachts. I call it an RV on water.
Each fully equiped with Galley, Head, Shower and Salon.
I have since completed my 101-103 Basic Keelboat
104-105 Navigational Course work and logged 100s
of miles sailing in Lake Michgan and The Carribean.
I return each Summer to Traverse City to sail for
at least 4-7 days and try to log 50 to 100 mi. each time.
Usually we are in a different port each night. Sailing from Traverse City
to ports of Charlevoix, Boyne City, Northport, Elk Rapids,
Suttons Bay and Beaver Island.
This year plans are to take Brock and Paulina. Ports of call Charlevoix,
Petosky, and Beaver Island, weather permitting.
Sailing is one of the greatest joys I have discovered.
I think everyones bucket list should include sailing at least once.
Leaving Charlevoix Harbor under the draw bridge.

Grandma's Stove

This Morning on Grandma's stove:
Potato Egg Scramble, Usually diced link sausage
or ham with diced potato and onion, peppers.
Brown until cooked thru, then add 3 large eggs
scramble together. Shredded cheese on top.mmmm......
The Maytag Dutch Oven range of Grandma's still
works and provides delicious meals for us.
I am so glad to have a piece of "The Farm"
and perhaps my Grandma Ruth helping me cook.
The smells of that seasoned stove, often take me right back to
that special time.  Especially the pancake griddle, when I make
cakes. Gotta go I'm hungry!!!!

There's this place

It has been one year since Shelly and I returned
from our sailing trip in the US Virgin Islands.
After our first full day of sailing we anchored our
32' Beneteau in 12' of beautiful blue water.
The place was Coral Bay the SW corner of St. John.
Ships of the past would wait out hurricanes there.
A well protected bay about 2.5 NM long.
That evening we took our dingy to town,
tied up at an open air tavern, and hiked around the small village.
A small grocery to provision from, some homes, a school
and touristy shops. Then the wonderful smell hit me!
Grilled meat!!!, In a Open air tavern/ restaurant was my first
Cheeseburger in Paradise! I know what you mean now, Jimmy Buffet.
The place, (Skinny Legs) The food wonderful!!
So if you ever get to St. John and you're hungry,
There's this place......

Cocks crow

The morrow comes how do I know
it comes before the dawn tis the cocks crow.

Monday morning I found my Red rooster dead.
I thought he was a little old when I bought him.
Plan to go back to the same farm, and see if there
was a warranty. I heard that nearly all of their recent chicks
were Roosters. I have had several Roosters since starting on this
chicken thing. Some 10+ years now. The best hen protector
was my white Leghorn, Bullwinkle. He lived many years at the farm
and here in Casey. He survived the night of the racoons, (a different story)
Perhaps a Horror story for bedtime. Currently  I have 18 hens.
And they are starting to lay more eggs as the weather warms.

His cry is not for me, nor cow, nor sheep
His call is for his harem to rise from their sleep.
So I need no bell, no gong, or clock,
I'm awake long before then,
from the crow of the cock.

Recent reads.

This House of a Sky, Landscapes of a western mind.
(Ivan Doig) some what of a Auto Biography.
About growing up in the Montana wilderness
with his father and the connection to those who shaped his life.
This story is a compelling American tale of growing up.
It is beautifully written. And I highly recommend it.
Doig is brilliant in my book!

So Brave Young and Handsome (Leif Enger)
This book had everything River journeys, horses,
Pinkerton detectives, Outlaws, Gunplay and old cars.
A real journey thru an early 1900s America.
Oh and don't forget the girl and long lost love story.
Be prepared to not set this book down for a while.
A must read, I loved it.

Jesus is coming look busy

This recent bumper snicker I saw made me laugh.
It also adds to my latest rant.

The Christian Conservative is neither. The majority of
proclaimed CC that I know own at least 1 gas sucking SUV.
Latest poll (Can you live on $300.00 a week so that others might simply live?)
Now can you contribute the rest of your income to a world changing cause?
Put up or shut up!  I am neither, but I do not feign the CC badge. but the ability to live simply
has profoundly changed my life. So if you want to pretend that your Don't Tread on me Flag gives you
immunity to participation in solving our real problems. Wake the F**k up.

Eugene a Bunny tale

Eugene was born at the edge of the warren.
As he grew he heard so often,"Look, Listen, and remember
what the Great Wise Rabbit said.
Life was happy and full of wonder.

But there was so much to remember.
Only eat sweet clover, never the small red berries.
The field mouse is your friend the fox is not.
Stay in the pasture close to home.

As Eugene grew he would always test the boundries
One day following a fence row to a white gate, he found
a garden of vegetables. He ate the tender lettuce. He tried the
the carrots, and he met the farmers dog. Run Eugene Run!!!!

Another day He travelled to the edge of the warren,
He discovered a stream wide and fast. He drank it's
cool water, and splashed.
Then the current swept him in. Swim Eugene Swim!!!

Each time he got into trouble his Mother would scold him
Remember what the Great Wise Rabbit said,"look, listen
and stay close to home. Only eat the sweet clover, not the red berries.
The field mouse is your friend and the fox is not.

But Eugene would always test his boundaries.
One day he traveled so far to the edge of the forest.
Before him was a wide roadway with cars and trucks.
He ran back and forth it was exciting, A car came and.....

Now I know what you're thinking.
But that day his Mother saved him.
She pulled him back. But when she did so
She was hit in the head and never came back.

Eugene didn't know what to do.
The Great Wise Rabbit words made less sense to him now.
How could they to a young Rabbit.
He felt so small and alone.

I will never come out of my house thought Eugene.
But soon he got so hungry, I must eat.
I will eat the red berries, then perhaps I can be with Mother.
So he ate so many that he became sick.

But he awoke the next day, No Mother. Only a dizzy head.
So he went to the stream, fast and wide,
but today it ran slow and shallow.
So he drank some and went home.

Eugene would wake up each day and try
to think of a new way to be with his mother.
Temp the dog or the fox but each time he
would get scared and run home.

One day Eugene found himself on the edge of the forest.
Coming back from a day of running across the road.
He met a very old Rabbit, "Where are you going ?" said the old rabbit.
Eugene told him of his trouble, not being able to get run over to be with his mother.

The old rabbit turned to him and said,"It will happen soon enough."
Maybe if you quit trying so hard. You would find out it's not so bad.
Come with me I will teach you, tomorrow we will start with
Only eat sweet clover...........

For Mike RIP

Spring reveal thyself

Another day might bring my demise,
I wait for Spring to arrive.

Tree do bud grass bring green,
arrive tomorrow with bright color screen.

Winter abrasive wind be gone,
return warm with robin song.

For it is laughter of youth anew again,
Children, lovers and sonnets refrain.

God turn faster the clock and truely give,
and bring forth the Spring and let me live!
